As a community, we celebrate cycles within cycles. We gather to mark cycles of weeks, of months, of years, and of lifetimes. We celebrate at our weekly shabbat worship and study, at our annual holiday observances throughout the year, and for those lifecycle functions that punctuate our passage through time. We come together as kehillah to share time and events together. As Rabbi Harold Kushner puts it, we set aside “special days when ordinary concerns are transcended so that our souls are free to concentrate on the eternal.”
